ALBERT BECKLES (written by Albert Busek) Within the bodybuilding-community Albert Beckles is mainly known for his Biceps-Peak. But overall Albert is one of the all-time legends in our sport. The first time I met him was at the 1967 Mr. Universe in London, where he won the "medium" amateur category. It was the year Arnold won the "tall" category and finally took the overall amateur title. Ever since Albert became a friend and in the following decades we shared countless wonderful memories. To push him to the absolute limit I offered Albert Beckles 1985 to prepare for the upcoming Mr. Olympia at "Busek-Gym" in Munich. For 3 months he stayed at my guest house and I provided him with a car (Honda CRX), a full Frigidaire and most important, with the key to the Gym. To make a wonderful and long story short: On 1985 Olympia stage in Belgium Albert Beckles was in the shape of his life and was finally a close 2nd to winner Lee Haney. Until then Albert had already many pro victories and high placings under his belt and his career went on until 1991 with many more great appearances all over the world. After more than 100 contests one result remains the most important for Albert Beckles: "1985 Vice-Mr. Olympia". Not so clear is Albert's year of Birth, even for me until today? The day of his Birth is 14th of July, but the year? Some say 1930, some say 1938. If 1938 is right Albert would turn 80 this month. Born in Barbados, Albert lived most of his life in England and USA. I didn't have contact with him for some years, but I think of him and honor him with one of my photos, taken during his "prep" at Busek-Gym 1985.
